Eugene R. Zuber, age 98, of Arlington died at 4:15
AM Thursday, October 23, 2008, at the Arlington Good Samaritan Center.
He was born in Cridersville, Ohio, on Sept. 30, 1910, to the late
Eddie and Bertha (Roberts) Zuber. He married LaVonda Hilty on Aug. 3,
1935, and she died Nov. 28, 1995. Survivors are his daughter, Nancy
(Gerald) Glick, Arlington; four grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were an infant sister and
a brother, Don Zuber. Mr. Zuber attended Washburn College in Topeka,
Kan., received a bachelor's degree in education from Bluffton College,
and received a master's degree in administration from Bowling Green
State University. An educator for 40 years, he spent the first nine
years of his teaching career in Wharton. This was followed by 31 years
in Fostoria schools; seven as a teacher and assistant principal at
Fostoria High School; 18 years as the first principal of Fostoria
Junior High (Lowell building); and five years as a junior high
teacher. In addition, he worked for the recreation departments in
Lima, Findlay, Washburn College in Topeka, Bluffton, Lakeside, and
Fostoria. He has also been a member of Exchange Club, XYZ
Organization, Gideons International, and Wesley United Methodist
Church, where he and his wife were the originators of Shepherd Center
in 1980. An avid athlete throughout his lifetime, Zuber was undefeated
in tennis during his collegiate years and played the sport until he
was nearly 80. He won trophies for bowling in the 1960s and 1970s in
Findlay and Fostoria. He also won the Ohio State Checker Championship
several years and has placed in the top eight of many
US National Tournaments. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday,
October 25, 2008 at CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Arlington with Rev. Jerry
Kellogg officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay.
Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.
